Aside from a recent mini blizzard, it’s really starting to feel like spring in Denver, Colorado. You may have used the end of 2015 to donate ugly, unfashionable or ill-fitting clothes to charity to claim those oh-so-valuable tax deductions. Now that you have a little extra room in your closet and tax return dollars in your pocket, you should consider putting in a organizer or possibly taking a trip to the mall to score some new duds which you will then donate to charity in December 2016. It’s a vicious yet virtuous cycle. Some of those tired SEO tactics you may want to discard include:

  • Link farming
  • Keyword stuffing
  • Hidden text
  • Cloaking
  • Content scraping

Big Data is big this season. So consider adding pretty much any tactic that leverages Big Data including:

  • Semantic mark-up - Leverage NLP (Natural Language Processing) to create a html file of synonyms and keyword variations for all the copy on a particular page.Core code fundamentalization - Back-to-basics. Clean, simple code is in again. Think of your Geo-cities website, or your Comp Sci coding project, rewrite your website to be simpler. And if at all possible making things blink, use scrolling comic sans text and automatically play your favorite music. Remember just like fashion, everything old is new again!
  • Dynamic pixel customization (DPC) - Pixels make-up images, users respond very differently to different images. Leverage your user profile database and make sure that pixel assembly matches your user profile and watch your conversions skyrocket.
  • Aspect-ratio extension review - Take DPC to the next level and make sure that aspect-ratios are aligned with user intent.
  • Kangaroo algorithm preparation - Toilets swirl differently “down under,” and people south of the equator search differently and navigate sites differently so Google is encouraging SEOs to make sure that websites are optimized for the southern hemisphere where there is a great deal of potential future visitors. Mobilegeddon meet Throw a shrimp on the Barbe-geddon.
  • Kangaroo attribute profiling - (not be confused with the above) As you hop from site to site, users are picking up more and more information creating a more rounded profile or a “joey.” Eventually that profile joey matures and can live by itself and be leveraged for complex algorithms and data experiments without having to bother the parent for access or permission. Also known as Complex Cooking Cloning or CCC.
  • Back-end cracker analysis - User cookies are complex, weighty and sweet. User crackers are simple, lightweight and carry user micro-data and are a bit salty. This micro-data when aggregated can be more powerful than cookie data. Leverage this data to determine what side of a web page users gravitate to, whether users prefer the foreground to the background or do they prefer light to dark pages. This is not yet being leveraged by mainstream usability software and may require some understanding of CHEF to slice and dice. Get Crackin!

Cleaning out your closet or just reorganizing it requires prioritization. Business button downs are more important for everyday access than the sequin blazer you pull out for special occasions. Similarly, not all of these new spring SEO tactics are important for all websites. The tactics are generally ranked from most important to least, but every website is different with unique users (think Americans versus Australians). Be sure to review each of these carefully and weigh the amount of effort and the desired impact before getting your SEO gloves on. If you haven’t explored these tactics by April 1, 2016 then you have at least until next April Fool’s Day to talk to your SEO about their viability.
