The most unexpectedly effective form of brand communication right now looks like it was made by a teen in their bedroom, circa 2004. And that’s the whole point.
What is unhinged marketing?
Often defined by meme-aesthetics and labelled by audiences as the work of the ‘Gen Z intern’, Unhinged Marketing is when brands throw out the rule book and present themselves in a way that feels irrational, low-brow and chaotic.
Meta Cringe
Gen Z’s answer to the relentless pressure of curated online identity is to lean into the cringe deliberately. Whilst Millennials performed perfection online, with clean aesthetics and aspirational feeds, Gen Z have made themselves the butt of the joke. Being self-aware of your own awkwardness and leaning into it is the new cultural currency. It is both sincere and ironic.
The Analogue Movement and the Return of Friction
Alongside meta-cringe is a broader cultural retreat from the algorithmically-optimised life lived chronically online. The appetite for ‘anti-design’ has directly informed aesthetic preferences that are intentionally scrappy, lo-fi in their production and feel handmade rather than rendered with the latest technology.
The Anatomy of an Unhinged Marketing Ad
Unhinged Marketing has developed its own distinct visual and cultural language:
- Make it a Meme: Brands that use memes in their marketing, position themselves as relatable and culturally-tapped in. By borrowing existing comedic lore, they create nostalgia that connects and can strengthen affinity for the brand.
- Antagonistically Sh*tty Design: Pixelated graphics, garish colour clashes, disjointed digital collages and outdated design styles like Frutiger Aero dominate the visual style of unhinged marketing. This intentional design rule-breaking grabs attention as it is in complete opposition to the status quo.
- The Mascot Economy: The role of the mascot has evolved from traditional brand ambassadors to sentient social media celebrities with magnetic personalities. They have the unique power to say things a CEO never would, acting as a bridge between a stiff brand and a chronically online audience.
- Break Your Own Rules: The most powerful unhinged moments happen when a brand with a strong, established identity deliberately breaks its own rules and clearly knows it.
- Community Management as Content: Rather than creating chaos from scratch, the lowest barrier to entry point is showing up in someone else’s moment and gatecrashing the comments.
