Mark Zuckerberg and his pals are currently showing the world the upcoming changes to the Facebook platform at the F8 Developers Conference. For those of you that missed his keynote speech online and couldn't be there yourselves we've summarized some of the major talking points for you:

  • Timeline - Profile pages are going to become a timeline of peoples lives. Including photos, places visited, videos, music etc.
  • New Class of Apps - New social apps that help people express themselves in new ways. It is being called open graph.
  • Not just 'like' anymore. Read a book, Watch a movie, Hike a mountain.
  • Separation between News Feed and Ticker. News Feed is for sharing more detailed material, Ticker is for lightweight activity.
  • New Social Apps - Now includes Media and Lifestyle apps (It is currently just communication and games).
  • More realtime interaction with friends through apps - listening to music together for example (Massive synergy with Spotify)
  • Same with movies and TV shows. It seems like Facebook is trying to do even more to ensure people never leave the site.
  • Ditto for News, Media, Games, Food and other Lifestyle apps.
The New Facebook Profile Page

The main points we came away with was how Facebook is determined to keep users on the site more than ever through apps like Spotify and Netflix. Why go to Spotify online or iTunes when you can listen to music with your friends on Facebook? Friends recommendations will always beat those of an algorithm. Secondly the amount of data that Facebook is now going to have because of this update. Those in the music, movies, food and drink (anything lifestyle basically) should find it a lot easier to target consumers. Of course that is speculation on our part though!

So what do you think of these changes? Like?
